Excursion – Bristol – Friday 19th May 2017

To see other planned excursions please go back to the Excursions & Outings Main Page.

If ever there was a city with a story to tell, it’s Bristol.  Enveloped in the hills of South West England, it has its own unmistakable identity, grounded in roots from centuries past and carved out since by passionate locals and spirited fans.

A hotbed of artists and activists, walk the streets and become part of a living canvas; cycle from the city to the outskirts and discover our green credentials for yourself.

And that’s just a smattering of what makes this city the best. We invite you to get pedal ready in the UK’s first cycling city, don your street feet or walking boots, and discover the rest for yourself.

Our tour takes place on and across the Clifton Suspension Bridge where we shall learn about the competition to design the bridge, a project plagued with problems and how the end result differed from the original design. Our guide will tell us about Brunel and his family, explain how a suspension bridge works and how people crossed the gorge before it was built. We’ll hear some amazing stories about the people who used and maintained the bridge and the things that are done today to keep it working.

We shall supply maps of Bristol so that you can take full advantage of this day out in the South West and enjoy the sights of the City.

If for any reason you are unable to print off the booking slip then please write the required information on a sheet of paper and include with your cheque.
